DECT Roaming is where you have a number of DECT Base stations which connect to each other; this allows you to use your DECT phone across a large area. This is achieved by your DECT phone changing base stations when you move around the area and this will not interrupt any calls you are on at the time.
The cheapest method of achieving DECT roaming would be to buy either the Gigaset N300 or N510 with RTX repeaters. However there are some downsides to this method which are that this system can only be configured on a Hub type topology. Another bad point to this system is that they cannot be daisy chained. Furthermore all the repeaters would require local powering as they do not support PoE.
The best solution for DECT roaming would be to use the new Gigaset N720 DECT IP Multicell System. This system relies on a DECT manager which is the Gigaset N720 DM PRO and Base stations which are the Gigaset N720 IP PROs. This system works by all your DECT phones will connect to the closest Gigaset N720 IP PRO base station; then all the Gigaset N720 IP PRO base stations will be connect to the Gigaset N720 DM PRO DECT manager, which will then be connected to your PBX. The benefits of this type of system are that it allows for true roaming with seamless handover from base station to base station. Also all the devices support PoE so they will not need powering locally. Furthermore the system can be daisy chained, there is a large support for active calls and the handsets are low priced. However with everything there are a few down points such as every device requires an Ethernet cable and all the parts together come to quite a large price. The Gigaset N720 DECT IP Multicell System is currently not available in the UK but it should be getting released very soon and InternetVoipPhone will have it!

There is one other solution for DECT roaming is Aastra’s version. It is called the Aastra SIP-DECT™ which works like much like the Gigaset N720 DECT IP Multicell System but instead of having a DECT manager the base stations communicate straight to a SIP PBX. The Aastra DECT base stations used in this system are the Aastra RFP 32. There is one down point to this system which is that Aastra’s DECT handsets are expensive.

The Gigaset N720 DECT IP Multicell System is the latest piece of tech in Gigaset’s range and has not yet been released in the UK. The Gigaset N720 Multicell System contains to parts which are the Gigaset N720 IP PRO which is the base station and the Gigaset N720 DM PRO which is the DECT manager. The Gigaset N720 Multicell System can support up to 20 base stations and 100 handsets. The handsets it supports are the following:
Gigaset A510H
Gigaset C300H
Gigaset C59H
Gigaset E49H
Gigaset S79H
Gigaset SL400H
Gigaset SL610H PRO
Gigaset SL910H
Gigaset L410
Konftel 300W
Because the Gigaset N720 Multicell System is capable of supporting that many devices it allows it to be able to support 30 parallel calls and 8 simultaneous calls per base station. So let me do the math… if you take advantage of the full 20 base stations supported; the Gigaset N720 Multicell System can support 600 parallel calls and 160 simultaneous calls!
The Gigaset N720 Multicell System is optimised to work with Gigaset’s T500 PRO and T300 PRO IP PBX systems. Due to the advanced compatibilities with the Gigaset PBX’s it makes configuration extremely quick and easy with the Gigaset N720 Multicell System.
The Gigaset N720 Multicell System is also great in sound quality as well as the Gigaset N720 DECT IP PRO comes with HDSP™ which is professional HD sound. This improves the whole experience of a call as you can hear the caller clearly and they can hear you clearly as well.
